Although they both have the potential to treat a variety of diseases, they also have huge differences that make each of them unique. Let's take a quick look at the effects they have physiologically.
On Psychoactive Effects
THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid, while CBD is nonpsychoactive. This means that THC, when it stimulates the CB1 receptors, produces the “high” typically associated with cannabis use.
CBD, on the other hand, does not produce any of these effects because it acts as a CB1 antagonist and reverses the psychoactive effects of THC. In fact, CBD is a potent antipsychotic compound that it has the ability to control schizophrenia.

This is because THC has the ability to inhibit REM activities (the stage where dreams happen) and prolong the deep-sleep stage. With this property, THC has the potential to help patients suffering from sleep problems and nightmares.
On the other hand, CBD at a low dose promotes wakefulness. This will make you feel more alert and more stimulated. However, when given at a high dose, CBD also has the ability to prolong sleep.
THC, because it’s a psychoactive compound, can induce anxiety symptoms. It can even trigger paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, and even panic attacks.
CBD does not produce any of these effects. In fact, it produces a calming, relaxing effect. A number of studies have already been done on CBD and stress, and they showed that CBD has the ability to reduce stress and anxiety in patients suffering from generalized social anxiety disorder.
On Memory and Cognition
THC has the ability to impair memory and affect cognition when it activates the CB1 receptor, the cannabinoid receptor also involved in memory and cognition processes.
CBD, on the other hand, can counteract these effects. It reduces memory impairment caused by THC and, at the same time, improves cognitive performance. Studies have even shown that cannabis extracts reduced adhd symptoms.
The two cannabinoids may have big differences, but it doesn’t mean that one is better than the other. As isolates, they both have many medicinal benefits; but used together, they can even enhance each other’s effects, with CBD controlling THC’s negative side effects.
